After recovering from Tuesday nights Fashion Feud Festivities, Style Wylde caught up with Round 2 winner Julia Meeks, to discuss, art passion, and those damn mystery fabrics.

SW: On your blog, it says that you recently graduated from SFSU in apparel design, and started your own company. When did you first become interested in fashion?

JM: Art has always been important to me. I have explored many mediums and the process of creatively expressing myself has been a natural habit since I was very young. I would play around some in elementary and middle school with sewing but It wasn't until high school that it became clear to me that I wanted to pursue fashion design. It wasn't so much a culminating moment but rather a natural progression and I love every part of it. I like finding inspiration from life, I like the designing, the sketching, the pattern making, the sewing the research, the finished product and shows. I really do love it all.

SW: What aspects of the industry are you most passionate about?

JM: It's an interesting question because I find that I go off the grain when it comes to the industry it's self. As a designer quality is one of the most important aspects of my work. The feeling of putting on a garment that is tailored to your body and that you can feel the work that went into it is so powerful. I am so inspired by visions that are unique and that aren't trying to fit into the mold of what the mainstream is doing. I think there is so much creativity out in the world, on a design and business level, and I love to try and understand where that vision came form and how it was implemented. With that said I am passionate about the whole process of the apparel industry as a whole entity. I just hope that as a part of the next generation of designers I can contribute to the shift to being socially and environmentally responsible as well as bringing artisan quality work back before old techniques die off.

I consider myself both a fashion designer and a social entrepreneur. I received my degree in Apparel Design from San Francisco State University and was blessed to have the topic of sustainability and innovation woven into our coursework. That combined with my studies in Milan for a year abroad shaped my identity as a designer to be all about full circle thinking and quality. I always systemically approach design so production, wearability, marketability and a life-cycle analysis are built into my product during its conceptualization.

I believe that true innovation starts with good design, and that in order to be environmentally and socially responsible we must re-interpret the supply chain starting with design. I have designed and produced 2 collections on my own, co-designed and created start-up company “Eclissi” as well as co-designed for the fair trade organization AltroMercato in Milan, participated in fashion shows and showcases including the San Francisco Fashion Awards, and am currently team designing a collection for Made In Oakland.

My design aesthetic plays upon opposing ideas, always searching for balance and subtle a-symmetry that moves the eye in a slightly off tune familiarity. I am passionate about what I do and I hope to promote positive social change through my art.
